Becoming a grandparent is a thrilling milestone. After all the years of raising your own children, who would have thought you’d need “Grandparents Classes?” Surprisingly, these classes are common and offered through many different providers. Times have changed, and so have childcare practices.
Let me paint you a picture. A friend complained about the grand staircase in her mother-in-law’s home, where the banister gaps were so wide a child could easily fall through. Yet, her mother-in-law dismissed any concerns as her boys grew up just fine in her home. You don’t want to be that grandmother. Staying updated on the latest childcare guidelines is crucial.
Here are new recommendations you should know:
- Less Bedding: All those warm and fuzzy extras, like stuffed animals and pillows? They’re now considered smothering risks.
- Less Frequent Bathing: Scripps suggests three baths per week during a baby’s first year to prevent skin dryness.
- Car Seat Safety: Car seats continue to evolve. Many states now require rear-facing seats until age two. Know how to properly install and use them.
- New recommendations about the physical and emotional development of infants and children
Here are some timeless essentials to remember:
- Current first aid guidance from the American Academy of Pediatrics as well as choking rescue and CPR
- “Back to Sleep”: Ensuring babies sleep on their backs to reduce SIDS risk.
- Avoid Baby Powder: It’s a no-go.
- Baby Proofing: Make your home a safe haven.
- Support Your Children: Your role is to support your kids as they navigate parenthood.
The Heart of Grandparent Classes
Understanding the gravity of your role as a grandparent is paramount. Your knowledge might be outdated. It’s crucial to remember that you’re part of a team and your goal is to support your children in raising their kids.
Embrace the Change
Things have evolved since you raised your children. Staying informed with new research on the physical and emotional development of infants and children ensures you provide the best care possible. Remember, as a grandparent, your role is to adapt, support, and enjoy the journey of nurturing the next generation.
